On April 28 th , I swam 2.5 k Butterfly as part of a total 5k swim. It was a very tough swim in aid of the Cancer research and Marie Curie charities .Once again this cruel disease has touched my family.

The people I know who are fighting this disease ,face pain far beyond what I felt yesterday and are finding the power to fight from deep within. I spoke to Dads cousin about her treatment.Aged 81, on her second set of chemotherapy, she said ” it will be fine, I am going to get to the end ” I need no further inspiration.

These sporting events and challenges that I take part in allow me to help in my small way . If we can raise funds for these causes ,maybe a cure or better treatment might be found.

I always remember my coach,John Moore ,when I swim . He spent time working on my technique. Over the years ,I have tried to stay true to all his advice .I feel that the stroke ,that everyone compliments me on ,is his legacy.

Sadly ,he died from lung cancer , a few years ago.

The challenge set by sporting events gives everyone a chance to achieve something positive. I have watched so many people complete their own Swimathon challenges again this year .They have all finished and once the exhaustion subsides , the smiles appear .

Swimathon also requires a huge amount of organisation, done brilliantly by the whole team at Stradbroke and the Swimathon organisation.

Today and tomorrow will continue to see many more complete their swims. One of my childhood swimming inspirations ,Duncan Goodhew, is coming to visit the pool today.I know that he will continue to inspire the swimmers as he has done for me .

On Sunday , approximately 18 teams of swimmers will take part in a fun and exciting way to finish the event. Yes, I will be swimming another 50 lengths. I am not sure if will all be done on Butterfly ,but I will try .

As always ,I cannot say how much I appreciate the support I get from everyone.
